Yet, if you’re browsing local listings today, it’s slim pickings — just five used Civics up for grabs, priced from R69,500 to R239,500, with a sweet spot sitting around R118,500. That’s a massive gap for such a tiny pool, which should set off your “buyer beware” radar about overall condition and spec. Every one of these cars comes with the tried-and-tested 1.8-litre i-VTEC petrol engine, and you’ll find manual, automatic, or the quirky semi-auto transmissions, depending on your luck. There’s no new stock, and that matters, because if you want a Civic in 2024, you’re strictly shopping second-hand. The two 1.8 Elegance CVTs are the most expensive at R205,900 and R239,500, which tells you they’re likely the best-kept cars in the bunch. Down at R69,500, the 1.8 EXi automatic is honest about its age and mileage — these are cars nudging 165,000 km, so you can expect well-worn seats and the odd rattle over Joburg potholes. Still, the i-VTEC is what the Civic should have been from the start: smooth, eager, and more rewarding than any Corolla of its vintage. Cabin materials have aged surprisingly well, especially compared to other Japanese options of the era. Just don’t fool yourself — you’re not buying a museum piece, you’re buying a car that’s seen its fair share of Gauteng commutes. If you pack smart and budget for TLC, there’s still value to be had.
