It’s for people who want to get out of hatchback territory but aren’t quite ready to cough up for a full-blown mid-size SUV, so there’s a real sense of squeezing value out of every rand. You get a choice of three engines—1.4-litre turbopetrol, 1.6 petrol, or a 1.5 turbodiesel—but forget about rowing your own gears; manuals are off the table. What you will notice is how dry the market is. Only 9 Seltos listings are live right now, stuck between R249,000 and R499,990, with the median hovering at R338,888. That’s thin enough to make any bargain hunter wince, because it means there’s not much wriggle room on price and you’re at the mercy of slow stock turnover. You won’t find a single new Seltos, just used units—so you’re buying into someone else’s first impression, for better or worse. The 1.5D EX A/T turns up most often, with three cars between R299,500 and R338,888, which on paper at least, looks like the diesel sweet spot. If you want to splash out, there’s the GT-Line 1.4T DCT at R359,900, or stretch to the CRDi EX+ Auto at an eyebrow-raising R499,990. Mileage averages around 77,500 km, straddling that line between “nicely run-in” and “watch for wear.” Against the Creta, what matters is that the Seltos offers meatier styling and a more focused driver’s cockpit—something you’ll appreciate if the Hyundai’s wallflower persona leaves you cold. It’s what the Seltos should have been from the start: a proper statement for buyers who want their compact SUV to stand out in Sandton or Melrose, not just blend in.
