Break down the details and the numbers get more interesting. The entry-level 220i Active Tourer A/T starts at R192,900, while the 218i auto tops out at R279,900, which probably comes down to a better spec or a gentler life. It’s what the 2 Series Active Tourer should have been from the start: practical, decently kitted out, but always a step behind the emotional appeal of a used X1 or even a Golf TSI. That matters because SA buyers have never really fancied MPVs, and the Active Tourer’s sensible shoes haven’t helped its cause. There’s value if you pack smart, but don’t kid yourself — you’ll be paying BMW parts prices, and you’ll be explaining your choice to just about everyone, even your mechanic.
