GWM’s P300 single cab might sound like the new kid in a tough neighbourhood, but it’s got the right credentials for South Africans who want workhorse practicality with a splash of up-to-date cabin tech. You’re looking at diesel power all round, with a 2.0TD to get you in the door and a 2.4TD pulling most of the weight. Gearbox choices? Base SX gets a 6-speed manual, but everywhere else you’ll find the slick 9-speed auto — exactly where rivals usually cut corners. With prices spanning R369,900 to R699,900 and a fat chunk of those sitting around the R599,900 mark, GWM’s made it clear: they’re not chasing bargain-basement buyers, but aiming squarely at folks who want a bit more without paying Hilux or Ranger money for it. Most buyers are eyeing the 2.4TD LS 4X2 9AT, which lands right in the R519,900–R529,900 sweet spot. The step-up LT 4X2 brings extra kit for R548,000–R599,900, while those needing 4X4 traction have to pony up R649,900–R699,900 for the LT and LTD. Almost every P300 on the market is fresh out the wrapper — only 13 used examples, and even then you’re talking an average 635 km on the clock. That’s barely past the first tank. What swings it for the P300, especially if your weekends are more N1 than Namaqualand, is the auto box and features you simply won’t get from Toyota at this price. For a lot of buyers, that’s the point — because when every rand counts and you want comfort as much as capability, the P300 starts making a whole lot of sense.
