That’s aggressive, given how crowded this segment’s become in Joburg’s northern ‘burbs and Cape Town’s family car parks. There’s only one engine: a 1.5-litre turbopetrol that’s built for daily traffic, not for Sunday-morning heroics. Gearbox choice is straightforward, too: auto or CVT, no manuals, which is what most buyers actually want. Stock is flowing freely, with about sixty active listings and the lionshare sitting right in the R386,900 sweet spot—so you’re not forced into poverty spec or pushed to pay for toys you’ll never use. Most of these “used” units have barely stretched their legs—average mileage is just over a thousand kays, so let’s be honest, they’re showroom-fresh. The Glacier spec is everywhere, priced between R379,900 and R439,900, and comes loaded with what real-world buyers expect: crisp digital screens, decent trim, and proper switchgear, not just cheap plastic. Vortex is the value play, starting at R329,900, while Inferno asks nearly R480k for the full-fat experience. What matters here is that the Core variant sneaks in under R340k, which lets Jaecoo scoop up buyers who’d otherwise be locked out of higher-spec Tiggo 4s. The J5’s trump card? It looks and feels a cut above—design that actually turns heads, and a cabin that doesn’t scream “cost-cutting exercise,” which is more than I can say for some rivals at this price.
