Mercedes-Benz’s GLC fights in the thick of the luxury SUV scrum—right up against the BMW X3, Audi Q5, and Volvo XC60. On paper at least, you’d think the GLC could rest on its badge, but the competition’s just too tight for that. SA buyers have a dizzying 25 local choices, from older diesels for R319,500 to AMG monsters at R2,699,900—some of these sticker prices will give you heartburn, especially when you remember what a family home costs in Joburg South. Only one new GLC sits in this set; the rest are pre-owned, which tells you where the action is. Engine options? Diesel, petrol, and plug-in hybrid, all with proper automatics—so no chasing down obscure trim levels to get a decent gearbox. If you want the GLC that makes the most sense, the 300d 4Matic sits right in the middle, with four examples between R999,900 and R1,069,900. It’s what the GLC should have been from the start: enough power, 4Matic grip, and all the toys you’d expect, without tipping into AMG’s price bracket. The AMG 43 Coupe is a different beast entirely—at nearly R1,9 million, it’s for those with deep pockets and a soft spot for badge snobbery. On the other end, GLC 220d AMGs for around R400k look tempting, but average mileage is already at 73,555 km, so you’ll want a careful look at service history. Interiors? Still a strong point; the GLC nails material quality and keeps physical controls where you want them. That matters, because premium money should buy more than a fancy badge—it should feel properly considered, especially when you’re coughing up close to a bar.
