Volkswagen’s Taigo goes after a very particular breed of South African buyer: you want something sharper-looking than a Polo Vivo, but the Tiguan’s price tag makes your eyes water. On paper at least, it’s a stylish B-segment crossover swimming in a pool already crowded by the likes of Hyundai’s Venue, Kia’s Sonet and Renault’s Kiger. You’re not getting variety under the bonnet — every Taigo runs the same 1.0-litre TSI with a 7-speed DSG, no manual, no diesel, and that’s the point. Pricing? Prepare for sticker shock. With 28 active listings between R369,890 and R647,000, and a median nudging R554,640, the Taigo’s spread is wider than you’d expect for a compact crossover. That’s down to spec and condition doing heavy lifting, not wild powertrain options. If you’re trawling AutoTrader, the R-Line DSG floods the listings — 17 out of 28, priced from R369,890 to R647,000, depending on how much kit you want and how gently it’s been used. The Life DSG makes up the other nine, hovering between R369,900 and R559,000. Most are recent — think 2022 to 2024, with mileage under 15,000 km, so you’re basically looking at demo returns and ex-fleet stock that haven’t been flogged. That’s good news, because you’re getting a nearly-new car for less than the 16 brand new ones dealers are still pushing. Why would you pick the Taigo over a Venue or Sonet? Refinement, plain and simple. That DSG is smooth around town, and the VW badge still means something to South African buyers. The cabin, too, feels a cut above the Koreans — better laid out, more grown up, and just that bit more premium for your spend.
