Tata Indica

Tata’s Indica is about as basic as South African motoring gets. If you’re after Bluetooth, fancy screens, or any sort of street cred, keep walking. This is a car for buyers with wallets stretched as thin as a Joburg pothole—people who need something, anything, to get them from home to work and back, with the fewest possible frills. On paper at least, it’s up against the Suzuki Alto, Renault Kwid, and the Chevrolet Spark, but the Indica’s even more anonymous in our market. Manual gearbox, 1.4-litre petrol engine, and nothing that’ll distract you from the actual act of driving. Just two are listed right now—R69,950 and R89,950—so you’re not so much shopping for an Indica as you are bumping into one by chance. That tells you almost everything about its standing in today’s used market.

Both cars on sale are Vista trims: one a 1.4 INI at R69,950, the other a 1.4 INI EGO at R89,950. They span 2010 to 2015, and both show average mileage north of 157,000 km. That matters, because at this price, every kilometre is someone else’s history. What set the Indica apart from the Kwid or Alto back in its heyday was a touch more space and a cabin layout that felt familiar to older South Africans, not like the toy-like cabins in some rivals. No new stock anywhere—this is strictly a used-car scavenger hunt. If you’re picking an Indica over a battered Polo Vivo, it’s purely about the rand, not the romance, and that’s the point.
