Geely’s Galaxy E5 lands in South Africa with its crosshairs set firmly on the Volvo EX30 and BYD Atto 3, but without asking you to remortgage your house. Prices run from R699,999 for the Aspire to R759,999 for the Apex, and you can see immediately that Geely isn’t interested in confusing buyers with too many choices. All electric, no hybrid safety net, and a single-speed drive—this is meant for Joburg or Cape Town commuters who have sorted their charging at home or work. If you’re planning long hauls between provinces every other weekend, you’ll want a rock-solid DC charging network and a bit of patience. On paper at least, the E5’s value pitch makes sense against the likes of BYD and even those bottom-rung MG4s. Three out of four E5s on the market are Apex spec, all hovering at R759,989 to R759,999, so you’re really just picking a colour at that point. The lone Aspire at R699,999 looks like the way in, and with average mileage at just 732 km, someone likely used it for test drives or as a showroom bait car. What South Africans should really be grilling Geely about is the charging speed—can it do a proper 100 kW DC session, or are you stuck nursing it at a mall charger for an hour? Claimed versus real-world range is also non-negotiable, because shiny spec sheets mean nothing if you’re sweating it on the N1 with 10% battery left. Cabin materials have come a long way from Geelys of old, and that matters, especially when you’re dropping nearly R760k on a badge that still draws blank stares in Sandton parking lots. If they’ve nailed the basics—physical buttons where you need them, decent build, honest range—the E5 could be what the Chinese EV wave should have been from the start.
