Infiniti’s Q50 always felt like an odd fit for South Africans who wanted a mid-size sedan with luxury leanings. It’s wedged between mainstream options and the established German trio, but never quite got the traction it needed. Right now, if you want one, your only real shot is a lone 2.2-litre diesel auto, stickered at R229,900. That seems tempting until you remember how rare parts are—and how threadbare the local support network became after Infiniti’s retreat. On paper at least, it’s got rear-wheel-drive and a badge that stands out from the Parktown parade, but you’d need to be brave (and maybe a bit stubborn) to gamble on long-term ownership here. That single 2.2d Sport, showing 115,000 km from a 2015 build, highlights the real challenge. It’s a lot of car for the money, but you’re shopping against C200s and 320is that come with dealer backing, guaranteed parts, and a paper trail you can trust. The Q50’s steering always felt sharper than most, and cabin hush was above its price bracket, but those strengths fade when you’re stuck waiting months for a simple replacement part. This isn’t a real marketplace anymore—more a curiosity for collectors or die-hards than a practical sedan for Gauteng commutes or Cape Town school runs. And that’s the point.
