Range Rover’s Velar carves out its own little piece of the premium SUV pie, blending coupe swagger with that signature British formality. You’re not exactly spoilt for choice in the used market, though. Just three diesel-only listings float between R619,900 and R799,950. That puts it head-to-head with the Porsche Macan, BMW X4, and Merc GLC Coupe — all shouting about similar badge appeal and, on paper at least, similar road presence. Diesel makes sense here, both for our fuel prices and the reality of long, flat N1 slogs. These are all automatics, as expected. With the median price at R789,950, the one D180 SE at R619,900 stands out as the value buy, but don’t expect sellers to budge much. There simply isn’t enough stock floating around for a proper haggle. Every car in this set is a 2019 model, meaning you’re staring down five or six years on the clock and a not-unreasonable average of 71,600 km. The D240 SE, with its extra 177 kW muscle, commands the higher end of the range — and if you pack smart for regular Joburg or Durban trips, that torque will matter. But let’s be honest, Velar buyers are usually drawn by the interior. The horizontal dash, tactile physical controls, and a cabin that still feels current, not stale, give it an edge the X4 struggles to match. Supply is thin enough that you can’t wait and hope for a flood of fresh choices. If you’re set on a Velar, you’ll need to move quickly, because the right one probably won’t sit around long.
