BAIC’s presence in South Africa is, frankly, more of a curious footnote than a market force. Most local buyers only stumble across the name when scrolling for SUVs under R400k, not because they’ve actually set out to find a BAIC. The numbers back that up: 22 active listings, almost all used, with prices from R319,500 to R639,999 and a median just above R374,200. That puts BAIC squarely in the same hunting ground as Haval and Chery, but here’s the rub — 21 of those cars are used, only one is new. Franchised retail? Almost invisible. That shifts the equation entirely, because if you’re buying a secondhand BAIC, suddenly things like dealer support and spares start to matter a lot more, especially once the warranty is half-spent or gone.

The X55 makes up the bulk of what’s out there — 19 of 22 listings, all petrol, all SUV, running from R319,500 to R509,900. On paper at least, it’s pitched directly at the Haval Jolion and Chery Tiggo 4 Pro, but BAIC doesn’t have their local traction or resale confidence yet. The B40, the only other model in sight, is a bigger SUV aiming ambitiously at R639,999 — a tough ask for a badge buyers barely know. No diesels, no hybrids, no hatchbacks. Just petrol SUVs, and almost nothing else. But if you pack smart and need space on a budget, the X55’s cabin size for R350k used is hard to ignore.
