Ford’s Kuga once promised the world to South African families chasing value, but now it sits in the shadow of rivals like the Mazda CX-5 and Hyundai Tucson, both of which have simply aged better in terms of dealer support and actual parts on the ground. You’ll find petrol and diesel Kugas out there: 1.5 and 1.6 EcoBoosts, plus a spread of 2.0 TDCi diesels, each paired with either a manual, traditional auto, or the occasionally fussy dual-clutch. Scan the classifieds and you’ll see every single one is used—2013 to 2019, nothing newer—and priced from R119,500 to R328,888, with a chunky median at R187,245. That tells you most stock is older, mid-tier, and well-travelled, not the unicorn low-mileage Titanium you might be hoping for. Mileage tells its own story: 169,261 km on average, which is what you’d expect after a decade on South African roads, and you’d better factor that into your offer. The 1.6 EcoBoost Trend gets you in the door from R119,500, while a 2.0 TDCi Titanium AWD Powershift stretches up to R229,950, depending on which of the three you’re looking at. There’s even a single 2.0 TDCi ST AWD Powershift floating out there for R328,888, but unless it’s barely run in, that’s wishful thinking. On paper at least, the Kuga’s always felt like the AWD value play, with diesel punch that actually matters on the N3, especially if you pack smart for long-haul family trips. Just don’t skip the service history—high milers on a dual-clutch need a forensic look before you sign anything.
