BMW 8 Series
BMW’s 8 Series doesn’t so much compete in the local luxury coupe space as haunt it. You’re lucky to spot more than a handful listed in South Africa at any given time — right now, just two, both priced between R1,499,900 and R1,799,500. That’s not an accident. This is a grand tourer for buyers who’ve long since outgrown the 4 Series and now want something with real presence. Mercedes-Benz CLS 53 AMG, Porsche Panamera, Audi RS7 Sportback — those are the only names that matter here, and, on paper at least, each brings its own flavour. Both BMWs run petrol engines and slick automatics or semi-autos, because nothing else would do at nearly R1.5 million.
Here’s what’s on offer: the M850i xDrive Gran Coupe (G16) at R1,499,900, and the fire-breathing M8 Competition (F92) at R1,799,500. That’s a R300,000 leap, and, if you ask me, it buys more than just badge polish — you’re getting a whole new level of intent. Both cars are used, from 2020 to 2024, and with an average mileage of just 19,250 km, they’re barely run in. That matters. Unlike the Porsche or Mercedes, BMW’s Gran Coupe actually lets you use the rear seats without a chiropractor on speed dial. New ones simply aren’t available. If you want an 8 Series, you’re hunting in a very shallow pool, and prices reflect that exclusivity.
